The next step?
I know a bit of PHP, mainly from trial and error.
However, I recently have been interested in creating my own scripts from scratch or at least modifying existing ones to truly suit my needs. I noticed that W3Schools offers a free basic PHP tutorial, which I haven't really completed yet, but once I'm done with that, what do you recommend?

Make sure you completely understand PHP before you get into coding for clients. I suggest you buy a book, for example, I have "PHP and MySQL Web Development", fourth edition, by Welling Thomson. It's a great book and I'd recommend it. It covers just about every aspect of PHP and MySQL as well as some AJAX.

Yea make sure you know the language fully and thoroughly before you start offering services for it. Practice your skills and be sure!

If you understand any language spoken in Scandinavia; Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, I would recommend that you read a book by Svend Andreas Horgen, called "Webprogrammering i PHP". It's a very good book which will teach you everything you have to know, from variables to functions, to MySQL and user systems.
You should try to create "clones" of other websites. Do not download any clone script, but try to make for example a forum from scratch, or a member portal etc. |

The best way to learn PHP is to do it from a book ! Does not really matters from which one, but it makes things easier to learn & remember
I've 2 books, and there are a lot of information, not available on the internet ( which helps me a lot ).You can check tizag.com - they have a lot of great tutorials on PHP & MySQL ( that's my favorite site ).

The book I used to learn PHP years back was "PHP for the World Wide Web (Visual QuickStart Guide)" by Larry Ullman. Larry is a great author and I highly recommend his book. The latest release is the third edition of the book, and you can find it here.
That book will teach you the fundamentals of PHP. After you have a good grasp on the language, I recommend the QuickPro guide (by the same author). You don't need to read the QuickPro guide all the way through, just the topics that interest you. It's a great reference book too. It can be found here. |
